Monique Worrell Creates SVU to Manage Domestic Violence and Sex Crime Cases in Ninth Judicial Circuit

Orange-Osceola State Attorney Worrell has created a special victims unit to manage domestic violence and sex crimes cases in the Ninth Judicial Circuit. Assistant State Attorney William Jay will lead the unit, which was created to reduce the backlog of cases. There has been a nationwide increase in domestic violence cases since the pandemic began in 2020.

PJI recently hosted State Attorney Worrell as part of a panel of local leaders to discuss how domestic violence is being addressed in Central Florida. This panel discussion followed a morning keynote event with Rachel Louise Snyder, an American journalist and author of No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us.

PJI  included domestic violence prevention and education as a main theme during the week long 2022 Conversation on Justice Conference, because addressing domestic violence as an adverse childhood experience (ACE) and potentially traumatic event is in line with our collective impact movement to create a more resilient community.
