Join us: Conversation on Justice

 

PJI's Conversation on Justice (COJ) is Monday, January 30 through Wednesday, February 1, 2023, and is an opportunity to listen to experts on issues that help us cultivate a more equitable culture in our communities.



The in-person and virtual conference covers hot-button topics such as race and wealth inequality, gender identity and expression, immigration, a black history month celebration breakfast, ability and accessibility, the environment, and more.



Joining us virtually is Dr. Jamila Lyiscott, a nationally renowned speaker who currently serves as an Associate Professor of Social Justice Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she is the co-founder and co-director of the Center of Racial Justice and Youth Engaged Research. Dr. Lyiscott is the recipient of several prestigious awards and has delivered keynotes and workshops hundreds of institutions throughout the nation where she works closely with youth, educators, and communities towards racial healing, equity, and justice. She’s the author of Black Appetite. White Food.: Issues of Race, Voice, and Justice Within and Beyond the Classroom and recently presented the TEDTalk “3 Ways to Speak English. Dr. Lyiscott’s presence at COJ is made possible by the Endowed Chair awarded to Professor Bonnie Oliver at Valencia College.

Additionally, The Cost of Poverty Experience, COPE is an interactive a three-hour simulation and debriefing that provides a brief glimpse into what it feels like to walk for a month in the shoes of families trying their best to just survive with incomes between 100% and 200% of the federal poverty level. Facilitated by the local nonprofit and Creating a Resilient Community member, Poverty Solutions Group mission is to sustainable poverty reduction through community collaboration.



Poverty Solutions joins us on Tuesday, January 31st for the opportunity to walk in the shoes of an individual in poverty and learn from those making the journey out of poverty. Register here.



Each session, through the power of transformative stories, facilitated discussions, engaging activities, and multi-media delves into conversations whose goal is to promote a culture of peace and justice and mend the fabric of our humanity.
