Trauma-Responsive New Zealand

Ironically, Maori are expected to "celebrate" Waitangi Day and yet....#2

The following is the journey of yet another mother trying to get her son access to quality education for her son here in New Zealand

Yes, Maori again

Her journey is totally unacceptable and we continue to WAIT for professionals to resolve the issues

This is how Maori are treated here in New Zealand

We are expected to be grateful for what we get and to "celebrate" Waitangi Day on 6 February 2023

183 years later and this is the best our NZ education system can offer our people?

As Maori, we are blamed for poor educational outcomes and for causing trouble by speaking up.

We are told to send our children to school and shut our mouths and be grateful that our children are so fortunate to get an education.

Those that succeed often leave us behind to fend for ourselves.

Many of us do not know our rights and do not get the support of legal teams. The Ministry of Education and other government agencies will have access to Crown Law to represent them.

We are left to self-represent with no legal knowledge.

We are told to go to Community Law who tells us that they do not have the legal knowledge to represent us.

It would be unethical for them to represent us.

So we go it alone and defend ourselves

That in NZ is called Natural Justice

Back to case #2 - The mother concerned about the safety of her son and other children in the school

Who is involved in trying to resolve this issue - far too many.

  • Ministry of Education
  • Three Limited Statutory Managers
  • Ombudsman
  • Education Review Office
  • Teachers Council

One must ask -

  • Why does it take so long?
  • Why the need for the involvement of all the professionals?
  • What are they doing?
  • How much money will it cost the taxpayer?

Note:

The principal remains working with no consequences with the support of the Ministry of Education.

The mother advocates for her son with my support

We have no funding and we do not have a legal team

Initially, complaints were made to the relevant agencies tasked to provide resolution and support - we were declined. We were ignored and disregarded.

Education Review Office published a report in November 2022 effectively BLAMING parents for poor student attendance.

Students will not go to school to be treated so disrespectfully

Parents will not send their children to school to be treated with disrespect

Because it increasingly more schools are NOT SAFE for our children.

Resolving these issues is a systems-wide problem and whanau cannot do that for them

It is very clear to me, given the involvement of so many professionals in the two case studies I have presented that the professionals are ineffective in resolving the issues

Their poor performance has exacerbated the problem by involving more professionals, protracting the process and causing significant and long-term harm to the children and whanau especially poor educational outcomes.

The money, resources and time pumped into the professionals to resolve the issues do not go towards supporting our children and teachers.

Can they not see that their poor performance is denying children access to quality education?

The following are in her words:

Our children should be safe at school.
In February 2021 a Teacher Aide was employed to work with my son. A Police vet was not completed before employment commenced if it had been done this person would not have worked in the School with my son and all children at school.
It is alleged the Police informed the SENCo about the TA. The Principal, the Board of Trustees and the MoE knew immediately.
The School and Board of Trustees did not inform me they had a sex offender working with my son. No apology or support. I should have been informed
The TA was employed to support my son during break times and was with my son and other children unsupervised. Board Chair said there was a verbal agreement the TA would not be alone with children at any given time.
It is alleged the TA only worked in the School for 3 days as they were arrested.
Mandatory reporting was not done to the Teachers Council.
Accountability for harm is not ok and I am disgusted that the Board Chair tries to justify it and downplay it.
The Principal, SENCo and class Teacher are still working with the children.
This is not the only time the school has breached legislative requirements re Police vetting.
The Principal, SENCo, the class Teacher, a syndicate leader and an office assistant have made disparaging remarks about me to discredit me but the evidence speaks for itself.

@anne kurtz it is important for me to raise awareness of how our children and parents are treated by our education system here in NZ.

If I did not share my concerns and if I did not complain then we would not get change and these parents plight would go unseen and unheard

Complaints drive transformational change

I will continue to raise my concerns

I do it to honour the people I work with

I ensure that their struggles are not done in vain - that their hardship WILL make change.

They will be seen and heard

I have a responsibility to ensure others know because I see the injustice of it all.

I cannot and will not remain silent by holding this information tightly to myself and cover it up.

You are welcome to comment. I acknowledge you but I will continue to reluctantly wait as I have no choice and I will stand tall and continue to complain aka raise legitimate concerns.

Be safe

Be well

Safe travels

Thanks, Anne for raising awareness of the floods in Auckland

I live in Auckland - yes we need support

Fortunately, we have drinking water, electricity and internet

It is a good time to clean out your cupboards and give to those in need

I am in South Auckland with whanau - got stuck and stayed to support whanau

In Takapuna, the Spencer was busy taking on people as their homes are ruined

Yes, people need support with just being with them and listening and offering cups of tea.

I suggest people remain in Auckland and help out rather than go up to Waitangi to protest

Protest online in downtime and help out rest of the time

Aucklanders need help down here

I hope you are safe
