Epic’s Trauma-Informed Care Workgroup: Could the EMR support trauma-informed care principles and initiatives?

Members of Epic’s Trauma-Informed Care workgroup discuss the formation of their learning collaborative and share examples of how the EMR could be used as a tool in the transformation towards trauma-informed care.

Presenters:

Lisa Hofmeister, BA

Quality Manager and Trauma-Informed Care Workgroup Lead

Lisa has a B.A. in Psychology and a career in IT that includes 11 years with Epic’s Quality Management and User Experience teams.   In 2020, she and a colleague co-founded Epic’s Trauma-Informed Care workgroup with the goal of investigating how Epic might be able to support the TIC movement.  Since then, they’ve established a learning collaborative similar to TICHER within the Epic community and have launched several projects to integrate trauma-informed care principles in Epic’s software.

Emily Barey RN, MSN

Vice President of Nursing at Epic

Emily leads the Epic Nursing Advisory Council, consults with Epic customers on strategies for comprehensive care record adoption, and collaborates with Epic research and development teams to support interdisciplinary practice. She contributes to product management in the areas of nursing, community health and social care, and was part of the team that architected the first integrated health and social care record as part of the Epic-Apotti program in Helsinki, Finland.  Since 2020, Emily has also collaborated with the Scottsdale Institute, leading their annual Social Determinants of Health Summit with national leaders from population health, community health and investment, and health equity.   She is a graduate of the Yale School of Nursing.

While I have often thought that EPIC could address this and it sounds like a needed aspects, but as someone who experienced medical errors EPIC is a significant source of my trauma. It is well known that doctors doctor charts after errors. Now those doctored charts are unescapable due to EPIC.
At many facilities there is not an option for patients to add the truth to their record. If they use the messaging app to add the truth, they are removed from the messaging app.

Additionally, the wordage placed in HIPAA consent surrounding EPIC are not transparent. Meaning they are agreeing to share their information without knowing they are agreeing to share their information.

My last correct H&P is from 2010 at UCSF. My records have been adversely doctored at John Muir Health since that time. Unfortunately, attempting to leave did not help because the doctored recorded followed me. every where.

The application is as good as the people putting information into- there is a significant lack of understanding about trauma through out the medical system. This lack of training results in harmful documentation.

Signed an RN trained in TIC along with 1000 hours in trauma training who has a history of "extremely severe medical trauma due to the handling of a simple medical error"
