Discussing Definitions - What is Tolerable and What is Intolerable?

Discussing Definitions - What is Tolerable and What is Intolerable?

Introducing a new regular discussion series!

Discussing Definitions is a facilitated open community dialogue exploring common terminology and concepts used in mental health and trauma-informed care.

This week's topic is the mental health notion of tolerance.

What is the Discussing Definitions series?
Within communities using these concepts and terms, there is often little to no consensus in what precisely is being meant or referred to by a given concept. Partly, that's just a feature of work and studies in the humanities. That said, it still seems as though mental health concepts could be more clearly described, with more agreement between stakeholders, than they currently are.

Rather that have a singular individual figure this out themselves, this event is a chance to collaboratively build definitions and understandings that, ideally, are agreeable to all stakeholders involved. One community, united under one broad understanding of what mental health is and isn't.

This will require a degree of personal humility. Some challenging of status quo beliefs and long-standing descriptions. Descriptions that were never developed by the full community impacted by them. Participants will be asked to utilize the principle of charity, an analysis technique where seeking to understand differing points of view by first trying to understand each view in its strongest, most credible form before subjecting the view to appraisal.

Who Is Hosting This Event?
Meetings will be hosted by Max Taylor, a experienced mental health advocate, peer community developer, and trained meeting facilitator. Max is a longtime practitioner of NVC communication methodology.

Max is the founder of the Social Reality Lab project, an attempt to explore mental health theory, social dynamics, and broader society using a critical psychology approach. This approach is deeply informed by both lived experience and professional perspectives, and reflects understanding gleaned from interactions with a broad range of communities, especially marginalized ones.

The Social Reality Lab, like this meeting series, is meant to be ever-evolving and open to feedback and adjustment. If you need to contact Max, he can be reached at max.taylor@neuroclastic.org
