ACEs Connection Stands in Solidarity with the Worldwide Protests for Racial Justice

In response to the police brutality and racism that caused the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless other African Americans and people of color, ACEs Connection supports the worldwide protests demanding racial justice. Integrating practices and policies based on the science of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) — being trauma-informed — requires us to be racially just.

Our organization's vision is a world where all people thrive. Our goal is to prevent ACEs, heal trauma and build resilient communities. To heal from the abuses of the past and the present, implementing ACEs science requires individuals, families, communities and systems to address historical trauma and eradicate racism.

This work is personal, professional, and must be done by all organizations, including our own. We have made a start with developing an equity statement last year, below; doing staff training; developing a diversity, equity and inclusion tool for ACEs initiatives; and making sure that ACEs Connection gives continuous attention to the issues, the voices and the images of black and brown people. However, we acknowledge that the work of carrying out anti-racist practices and policies for our team and for ACEs Connection is ongoing, messy and overdue.

Therefore, we are committed to live and lead in anti-racist ways that promote our work of preventing adversity, healing trauma and creating resilience. This includes replacing policies and practices based on blame, shame and punishment with those based on understanding, nurturing and healing.

Equity Statement

ACEs Connection is an anti-racist organization committed to the pursuit of social justice. In our work to promote resilience and prevent and mitigate ACEs, we will intentionally embrace and uplift people who have historically not had a seat at the table. ACEs Connection will celebrate the voices and tell the stories of people who have been barred from decision-making and who have shouldered the burden of systemic and economic oppression as the result of genocide, slavery, family separation, forced relocation, mass incarceration, red lining and all other practices, policies and institutions that have traumatized marginalized groups. These groups include people of color, people living with mental health and substance use challenges, people living with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQI community.

Wonderfully written - Kudos!

There is no cause greater nor any group more dedicated than those working at AcesConnection.com to put an end to the spinetingling-headexploding statistic of 1 in 7 abused/neglected.

The GOALS are to;

(1) Prevent ACEs,

(2) Heal trauma, and

(3) build Resilient Communities.

1. Replace policies and practices based on blame, shame and punishment with those based on understanding, nurturing and healing.

2. Heal from the abuses of the past and the present by implementing ACEs science - Individuals, families, communities and organizational systems must address the intertwined biological and cultural HISTORICAL TRAUMA to eradicate racism.

3. (a). A Resilient Communities first-responding and social support organizations must understand the NEW Webster definition of Racism that now includes not just individual, but also system-wide institutional cultural and policy discrimination. Therefore, every first-responding and social-service organization must understand that leading in anti-racist ways means preventing adversity, healing trauma and creating resilience. This can only be done by replacing policies and practices based on blame, shame and punishment with those based on understanding, nurturing and healing.

(b.) Political, Governmental and Community first-responding and social-service organizations must understand that stress and adversity greatly affect how they operate because the behaviorally-transmitted effects self-perpetuate in a way that causes frequent epidemics of negative consequences in our communities that are preventable only through bold, transformative, transparent, direct  communications with each other. These frank discussions are needed to address the very real biologically-physical and bio-cultural consequences of Historical Trauma that go far beyond the *resulting* economics.

(c.) Every Political, Governmental and Community organization, but especially first-responding and social-service organizations, should develop a consensus on an Organizational EQUITY STATEMENT and then make it public.

STILL IN DRAFT FORM:

(d.) Professional OATHS should be updated to include and acknowledge this new information.

(e.) Both individual and institutional change and learning are needed - specifically this means having an awareness not just of ACEs effects on individuals and organizations, and of statistics like 1 in 7 abused, it means understanding how all of this fit into the BIG PICTURE and what the "big picture" is. Behavioral Hygiene - Sanitary Hygiene early 1900's

(f.) Police drug addiction penal empathy importance of asking why

(g.) how we instruct and discipline in schools and at home must be the same

(h.) There should be an awateness that this is a sociio-scientific revolution akin to the Sanitary Hygiene revolution of the early 19th century... consider financial restitution for slavery taking the specific form of mental and emotional health support?

(i.) Children are key to lasting change on regard eliminating racism: children are not just small adults deserbong of smaller punishments - incarceration of and training children to war is immoral.

(j.) A police culture of heroic sacrifice and service must include a willingness to put the lives of others, guilty or innocent, even above one's own and an understanding that this is a minimum expectation
