The Strong BRAIN Institute "Fundamentals of ACEs and Resilience - Level One" Course Now Available Online

The Strong BRAIN Institute, founded through a 5-year gift from Ballad Health, is the preferred resource for promoting the awareness and empirical study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs); for promoting the development and dissemination of evidence-based practices that prevent, reduce, or mitigate the negative effects of ACEs on health and health disparities; and for promoting a trauma-informed citizenry and workforce in the Appalachian Highlands region and beyond.

Recently the Strong BRAIN Institute released its first certificate course, Introduction to ACEs, Using Trauma Informed Approaches, and Fostering Resilience which is now available online for the cost of $80.00. Working in partnership with the James H. Quillen College of Medicine Continuing Medical Education Office this online course provides a 4-hour training presented by two of the Founding members of the Strong BRAIN Institute, Becky Haas and Dr. Andi Clements. This introductory course is updated content based on training the presenters delivered to over 4,000 professionals between 2016-2018 in the Appalachia Highlands region as they established the Northeast Tennessee ACEs Connection.

This training includes up-to-date graphics illustrating current knowledge about ACEs-related brain science and current information related to ACEs. A new module on building resilience was added to emphasize that while ACE scores may be fact, they are not fate. Included in this module are survivor story videos with inspiring examples of building resilience, along with a video from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that highlights how both positive and negative experiences have a tremendous impact on future violence, victimization, and lifelong health and opportunity and that community protective factors can prevent ACEs and lessen their impact.

This four-hour course is set up so that participants can advance through the training in roughly one-hour blocks. It is designed not only for direct service professionals with advanced degrees, but for the general community. The introductory module is designed to provide attendees with a trauma informed lens to foster greater personal and community resilience.  Armelle Pernet-Ecobichon, Carré d’aces founder & trauma informed leader for French speaking communities said after successfully completing the course, “If you do not know yet about ACEs science and how trauma shape the world, I recommend this course created by Strong BRAIN Institute members Becky Haas and Andrea D. Clements, PhD. In 4 videos you get the essentials from identifying trauma, how adverse childhood experiences impact future health, to ways you can foster resilience across organizations (all) using the SAMHSA principles. Thank you, Strong BRAIN Institute, for this meaningful and useful content and format.”

As a next step, the Strong BRAIN Institute Curricular Team will be producing more advanced “sector specific” modules (e.g., education, law enforcement, healthcare, faith community) so that attendees can add specific practical training relevant to their introductory knowledge.
