Stress and alcoholism. What now?

April has been quite the busy month. There were many sensitive conversations on various mental health themes. We focused on stress and alcoholism as they are huge problems in the Kenyan society.

Did you know that the disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of Kenya stands at 54,000 years. Those are the numbers of lives lost to alcohol. That number does not account for childhood trauma, financial stress, or terminal illness caused by alcoholism.

So we dived deeper into asking, what now? So what does it mean when we see acknowledge that alcoholism is a problem? More so, what is the effect of the same to children and families? We also asked whether there is a link between stress and alcoholism.

We then steered the conversation back to empathy and community care. It really is true that when one member's mental health is suffering, the whole community suffers as well.

"Empathy should help us not only hear the reasons but to also offer assistance where applicable. When someone who’s struggling is met with this kind of care, it helps them find a way of overcoming shame and guilt. In the best cases, such people ask for help and actually transform."
