How An Emotional Detox Can Help People Of Color Cope With Racial Trauma [forbes.com]

Exposure to racism, discrimination, and other forms of racial trauma have been proven to cause various mental health challenges, which can easily exacerbate general obstacles that are faced in everyday life. Many people of color report being overwhelmed by their thoughts and responsibilities to the point they feel stuck in quicksand. Some also feel drained and exhausted. Which can cause some people to feel emotionally out of control and sometimes more easily triggered β€” overreact to situations they typically would not find stressful.

For people of color who find themselves dealing with the challenges that often accompany racial trauma along with dealing with the ups and downs of life, experts recommend an emotional detox. Most people have heard of various types of physical detox is (think of the infamous green juice cleanse or master cleanse). But there is not nearly as much conversation about the benefits of going on an emotional detox. Experts argue that doing an emotional detox can help purge toxic feelings and can lead to better mental health.

What’s an emotional detox?

An emotional detox includes engaging in behaviors and activities that eliminate emotions that directly interfere with optimal mental health maintenance and are tied to physical health. Sounds easy, right? Maybe, for some. But, for many, disconnecting emotionally might be more complicated than what some might think.
