Ethical, Logical - Awareness and Action

A few days ago, I shared the post included at the end of this – and wanted to follow up with a few of the reflections from the guide (pg14):

*There is the question on why we might be allowing or/and creating injury ~  which takes us back to the need for the logic-connection foundation.

*And there is the question for individuals and fields: “How can we work with others, if we are allowing, and also in any preventable way contributing to their injuries?

The first reflection:

While I mentioned it in the webinar, I didn’t unpack it.  Most of what I would say, can be directly understood from the materials, however, there is an additional point, I didn’t include: What it takes for us to initially recognize sources of injury.  While the logic-connection foundation is the answer to that – let me explain the question a bit.

In our known existence -  What did it take for someone to say child abuse, rape, slavery, oppression, the list of atrocities, was wrong? Then how long did it take for enough people in a society to actually start to address it, to whatever extent? How recent, do we have laws, practices, policies, degrees of societal change (acknowledging they may not be right)?

And in this moment, “What are some suffering from, that ‘we’ don’t recognize yet?” Whether that is because: the person is unaware it is an injury; they may not be able to speak for themselves and need someone else to see and intervene; their society lacks logic-connection and they have no one to go to; we haven’t taken the time to analyze the possible impact of what we are doing; and so on.   Don’t we want to be seeking to answer this, now?

The second question:

How can we work with others, if we are allowing, and also in any preventable way contributing to their injuries?   The materials show, that to whatever our degree(s), we are.  Then it gives a framework to take action with.  The reflection is placed between – to allow processing of the awareness, and create accountability moving forward with the framework.

I share this tonight with the hope it will resonates.

092921 Post:

The resources provided were created for ethical standards, however, whether you work under ethical standards or not, let me explain some of how what is available benefits you.

Ethical self-care, provides a foundation and a pragmatic framework for the following:

  • Are we doing the best we personally and as our field(s), can?
  • Specific strategies for enhancing awareness of and minimizing ways in which we may be inadvertently contributing harm to ourselves or others
  • Understanding how we are interconnected, supports:
    • The work we do with others is part of our self-care.
    • Advocating for both prevention and support of the work.
  • A self-care framework that contributes to as community achieving our needs - that as we understand the interconnection of our world, in turn is taking care of ourselves

So, again, while the resources were created for ethical standards, they are for anyone.

About the resources themselves–

The webinar link is from an ethics training, “Connect All and Ethical Self-Care”, for the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (OCADVSA).  It is now available online, with 3hrs CEUS available for advocates (depending on their states rules) and LCSW.  It wasn’t my best presenting day, but the material hopefully speaks beyond that.  https://ocadvsa.coalitionmanag...raining/details/1183

Then based on feedback and looking forward, there is now an Ethical Self-Care guide (adapted from Module 1 of the full Connect All guide).  It should be applicable across fields, and I hope it is of benefit.
